Nothing is better than a hot summer day in Michigan and heading to the beach to play and relax with family and friends. Heading to the beach is by far one of our favorite things to do as a family, it is exciting, fun, and can be dangerous all at the same time.
Spending time in and around the water should always come with a sense of caution. Any body of water, from home pools and inland lakes to the Great Lakes and oceans, are dangerous in their own right. And it’s something that is not talked about as often as it should be.
Now, this is not to scare anyone away from the water. This information is designed to educate you and make you feel safe while in and around any body of water. A little bit of knowledge can go a long way when it comes to water safety.
According to the CDC, unintentional drowning (non-boating related) is the fifth leading cause of death in the US. On average, about 10 people drown a day. One in five of those deaths occur in children under the age of 14. That is some troubling information right? But, it does not have to be that way. A little bit of knowledge can go a long way and save lives.
The best way to prevent these unintentional deaths, LEARNING TO SWIM! Knowing how to swim and having the ability to feel comfortable in and under the water is key. Being able to swim gives more confidence in the water and offers a great exercise that can be done in any type of water.
Swimming skills are very important, especially if you have a pool, live by the water, or just like to head to the beach and hang out for the day like we do. Swimming lessons can begin as young as 4 months (with adult participation) at some schools like Goldfish Swim School.
Goldfish Swim School is a where my little ones currently have their lessons (they are 2.5 and 3.5 yo) and while I waited a little longer to get them started, I am so glad that they have begun their lessons. For my littlest one, I am in the pool with her and the instructors have been great with introducing her to going underwater and not panicking with fun drills and games. This is huge! For her it’s all about learning what happens when you go under and how to find your safest location if you need to get out. For my son, it’s all about learning swim techniques to propel him through the water and floating to keep his head above the water when needed. The instructors and staff are all knowledgeable and encouraging. My once weary daughter has been asking since we left to go back and my son is beyond hooked. So, not only are the having fun right now, they are learning valuable skills for the upcoming summer. Skills that I know will help them feel more comfortable and empowered as we travel around the Great Lakes.
